Ship Evacuation Behaviour Assessment facility
SHEBA
The SHEBA facility is unique in that it was the first type of rig of it's kind to simulate shipboard conditions on a large scale, with so many features incorporated into the simulation. SHEBA remains unique as it has been used to collect large scale trial data based upon typical passenger performance in a systematic fashion, incorporating emergency scenarios such as smoke and rolling motion.
Based upon the type of information that clients require to be collected, SHEBA can be modified to accommodate additional features specific to a vessel or structure scenario.
SHEBA was the source of the first real human behaviour data that was incorporated into a commercial evacuation simulation software package, maritimeEXODUS.
- 10 x 10 x 10 metre corridor with stair
- mounted on hydraulic rams to tilt up to 20 degrees
- motion control system to raise and lower rig at 5, 10 and 15 second intervals, superimposed over an angle of heel of 0, 5, 10, 15 or 20 degrees
- equipped with motion sensors and video cameras, transmitting information to video and data acquisition equipment
- contains 4 smoke generators as well as optical density metres to monitor smoke levels
- marine lighting and handrails
- modifiable to include custom features, including steel watertight doors and hatches; door sills; ladders and stairs to a hatch exit
- can be customized to include varied flooring and wall coverings, light levels and sources
